A 20-year-old male patient had a 2650-graft FUE transplant with Dr. Bauman in 2023, paying $24,000 (after a 25% discount). Early on he was positive, saying "I think he's a good Doctor he was very nice and professional and seems to care," but by 3.5 months he voiced concern about low growth in one temple, and by 6 months post-op he reported density and graft failure in the front of his left temple. In an August 2024 thread about dutasteride prescriptions, Enough_Membership_22 reported paying Bauman's practice a one-time $500 fee (up from $250 in 2023) covering lifetime follow-ups. They noted that medical treatment for dutasteride is handled by Bauman's Nurse Practitioner, saying 'You only see Dr. Bauman for surgical treatment.' They were started on 1.0 mg dutasteride, titrating up every 90 days out of caution about side effects, expecting it may take a year to reach 2.5 or 5.0 mg. He reports his bloodwork became severely abnormal from the anti-androgens ('My TSH was 55, total test was 108') and he's needed thyroid and testosterone-replacement medication for six years since. Commenter tenniskid16 consulted Dr. Alan Bauman on multiple occasions starting in 2017: Bauman confirmed his Norwood 5 diagnosis, prescribed a topical 'minoxidil drips formulation,' and separately attributed a burning scalp sensation to possible 'DHT inflammation,' putting him on finasteride — no transplant, grafts, technique, or price were ever discussed, and no surgery took place. He rated Bauman highly as a diagnostician, calling him one of 'two very good hair Transplant doctors' and saying 'I think they know what they're talking about,' and reported the finasteride 'dramatically' reduced his burning. However, the topical minoxidil formulation Bauman prescribed burned his scalp from the first night of use, and after trying it a few more times he stopped it and switched to oral finasteride instead.

u/Im_the_Blurrr is not a surgery patient of Dr. Bauman; after severe sexual side effects on oral finasteride, Bauman prescribed them a topical fin/min combo starting around February 2018, at a cost they describe as "super expensive. Like $100 a month." They rated it mixed to negative: "it sort of works with little to no side effects but it doesn't work anywhere close to oral fin and it dries out my hair and scalp sadly," and separately called it "so much work and so messy," preferring oral finasteride overall despite its side effects.

On Bauman's advice they switched from generic to brand-name finasteride after suffering low libido, poor sleep, and testicular pain on the generic, and reported the switch made a 'light and day' difference.
