Dr. Michael Hughes

Michael Hughes is a board-certified surgeon who spent more than 15 years in general, vascular and thoracic surgery before moving into hair transplantation.1 He was commissioned as a Major in the U.S. Air Force Medical Corps and served as Chief of Surgery during Operation Enduring/Iraqi Freedom.1 He trained in FUE from 2018 in Charlotte, NC, then relocated to Beverly Hills in 2020 to work with an unnamed "world-renowned hair surgeon" on FUE for celebrities, business leaders and political figures, before joining McGrath Medical in Austin in 2025 alongside longtime friend Dr. Dan McGrath.1 The practice describes its approach as ethical and patient-first, presenting options before settling on a treatment plan together.2

McGrath Medical states Hughes and McGrath, both trained general surgeons, perform Ultra-refined FUT, FUE, Extracellular Vesicle Injection Therapy and Combination Hair Regrowth Therapy.2 Its FUE explainer describes punch depth as reaching only the fat or fat-dermis junction, shallower than strip harvesting, and says its surgeons use high-power loupes to track follicle angle during extraction.3 The same page notes that at some clinics non-physician staff perform extractions under medical directors with little hair-transplant experience, and tells readers to always ask who will perform their surgery.3

McGrath Medical does not publish its own prices; its cost page instead cites general market averages, putting a hair transplant session nationally at $5,000 to $25,000 and the Texas average at roughly $8,500 to $15,000.4 The page lists graft volume, degree of hair loss, surgeon experience, geographic cost of living, and technique (FUE typically costlier than FUT) as factors that influence price.4 It offers LendingClub financing with a 0% interest promotional period, and CareCredit.4

Hughes's own bio lists him as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and an ISHRS Associate Member, holds board certification from the American Board of Surgery, and carries active medical licenses in Texas, South Carolina, California and Utah.1 Separately, the ISHRS's own directory lists him at Full Member status, a discrepancy from his site's wording, not resolved here.7 The practice's ABHRS-linked credential, held by founder Dan McGrath, is not attributed to Hughes.6
