Mature hairline vs receding: what people were told, and what happened next

Most men's hairlines move back somewhat after their teens. Whether yours is just settling into a “mature” hairline or the start of male pattern hair loss is a question people ask often in hair-loss forums. This page collects 286 reddit threads (2013–2026, r/tressless and r/HairTransplants) where someone asked exactly that about their own hairline, and shows what other people answered.

How far is “mature”? Even clinics disagree

There is no agreed measurement. Clinic guides give different numbers, sometimes on the same page:

  • “the hairline receding by half an inch to an inch”, between 17 and 30 (ASMED, Istanbul)
  • “no more than about 1 to 2 centimetres from its juvenile position” (City Skin Clinic, London)
  • “approximately 2 to 3 cm higher than a juvenile hairline”, and elsewhere on the same page “about 1 to 2 centimetres” (Aventus Clinic, Manchester)

What the guides do agree on: a mature hairline moves back roughly evenly and then stays put, while pattern hair loss keeps going, usually deeper at the temples. That's why one photo rarely settles it, and comparing photos over months does. (Pages checked 16 Oct 2026.)

What commenters told them

In 249 of the 286 threads at least one other person gave a view on the asker's hairline. The answer was:

mostly “mature” or “normal” 42% (105)
mostly “receding” or “balding” 37% (93)
split, commenters disagreed 13% (33)
“can’t tell from photos” (compare over time, see a doctor) 7% (18)

These are strangers judging photos, mostly in a hair-loss community, not diagnoses. Commenters can't see how the hairline looked a few years earlier, which is the thing that decides it.

The advice they got

Share of those 249 threads where at least one commenter said:

  • 42% finasteride
  • 27% compare photos over time
  • 26% see a dermatologist or doctor
  • 23% minoxidil
  • 20% stop worrying about it
  • 14% check for thinner, finer hairs at the hairline
  • 13% look at family history
  • 9% wait and see

What the askers wrote a year or more later

22 of the people who asked posted on reddit again at least a year later (their later posts are still on reddit). 19 of them said something about their hair: 11 wrote that it had kept receding or thinning, 0 that it had stopped or was just mature, and 8 didn't say either way. 14 mention taking finasteride (or dutasteride), 9 minoxidil, and 2 a transplant.

Read this with care: it's a small group, and people whose hairline stopped moving have little reason to keep posting in hair-loss forums, while people still losing hair do. So this says nothing about how often a hairline turns out to be just mature.

How this page was made

We took reddit posts whose title asks whether the poster's hairline is mature or receding (and left out posts about medication or surgery), kept those with replies from other people, and read the top replies of each to note the main answer and any advice. Each quote is copied word for word from the reply or post it links to. Removed posts are left out and usernames are not shown. Data as of Oct 2026.

Next: the receding-hairline self-check, the Norwood stages with what people at each stage reported, widow’s peak: is it a sign of balding?, balding crown or just a cowlick?, minoxidil results month by month, or, if a transplant is ever the question, the independent doctor directory.

SaveMyHairline is an independent hair transplant doctor directory: published prices, checked credentials and real patient reports, with sources — and no clinic can pay to appear.
