Dan McGrath is oprichter van McGrath Medical, een praktijk voor haarherstel in Austin, Houston en Dallas, Texas.1 De kliniek presenteert zijn weg naar het vak als persoonlijk: hij had als twintiger mannelijke kaalheid, onderging zelf een transplantatie en voltooide later een fellowship van een jaar bij Ziering Medical in Newport Beach voordat hij zijn praktijk aan haarherstel wijdde.2 Hij wordt bijgestaan door Dr. Michael Hughes, die de kliniek omschrijft als een voormalig majoor van de U.S. Air Force die in Irak en Afghanistan diende, terugkeerde naar een eigen praktijk en, nadat hij haartransplantatie ontdekte, werd opgeleid in FUE, onder meer in Beverly Hills.3 McGrath spreekt Spaans, en de kliniek stelt dat hij zelf dezelfde ingreep heeft ondergaan.4
Behandelingen en technieken
De praktijk biedt FUT, Ultra-Refined Follicular Unit Hair Transplantation genoemd, FUE en NeoGraft geautomatiseerde FUE aan, plus wenkbrauw-, baard- en gezichtstransplantaties.5 Volgens de Spaanstalige pagina van de kliniek voert Dr. McGrath elke transplantatie persoonlijk uit.4 De Engelse FUE-pagina noemt daarentegen in het algemeen "our surgeons".7 De kliniek beoordeelt vóór de operatie de gezondheid van de patiënt, het genezingsverleden, de leeftijd, het haarverlies en de kwaliteit van het donorgebied; de chirurg tekent eerst de haarlijn, met inbreng van de patiënt.6 Bij FUT past ze bij elke lineaire oogst een trichofytische sluiting van het donorgebied toe, een techniek waarmee volgens haar haar door het donorlitteken heen groeit zodat het bijna onzichtbaar is.6 Haar NeoGraft-systeem doet de extractie en plaatsing, wat volgens Dr. McGrath de duur en de kosten van de ingreep verlaagt.8

Consulten zijn gratis per telefoon of sms, omschreven als een uitgebreide evaluatie gevolgd door een behandeladvies; voor een virtueel consult is er een apart online formulier.1 Voor NeoGraft noemt de kliniek geclaimde voordelen, waaronder geen hechtingen, patiënten die doorgaans de volgende dag weer aan het werk zijn en ruwweg twee keer zoveel grafts per sessie als bij handmatige FUE.8
Kwalificaties en lidmaatschappen
McGrath is Diplomate van de American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery.10 De kliniek stelt dat hij ook oud-voorzitter is van de Board of Directors van die board.5 Hij heeft de status van Fellow bij de International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery.11 Hij staat ook vermeld bij de International Alliance of Hair Restoration Surgeons.12

Straight after surgery he said he thought they did a good job, but within weeks he reported being disappointed by a gap on the right side between the recipient area and native hair and worried that not enough grafts were used. At 133 days he was pleased with recent growth and said it was "turning out fine so far", though the gap was still noticeable and he doubted the doctor's assurance that it would blend.

Ok_Novel_7919 reports a FUT procedure at McGrath Medical as a NW6, with no date, graft count or price given. He describes a flat, low, aggressive and asymmetric hairline, huge gaps, a wide FUT scar of nearly 5 mm that keeps stretching, and no grafts in the top-middle area despite asking for them. He says nurse practitioner Dodge essentially performed the procedure while Dr McGrath was not in the building, after McGrath spent '10 seconds' placing the hairline. After several years and over half a dozen further procedures he says nobody has reversed the damage, and he repeatedly tells others to stay away.
