Edward Ball is oprichter en medisch directeur van The Maitland Clinic, gevestigd bij Portsmouth.1 Hij werd opgeleid in microchirurgie en dermatologie en werkte tien jaar in het team voor huidkankerchirurgie van University Hospital Southampton voordat hij overstapte naar haarherstel.1 Daarna voltooide hij een Fellowship in Hair Restoration Surgery in Beverly Hills bij Dr Craig L. Behandelingen en technieken
De kliniek biedt FUE en FUT, plus littekencorrectie na eerdere transplantaties elders.3 Bij bepaalde kleinere gevallen doet ze ongeschoren FUE.4 Volgens de FAQ extraheert Dr Ball elke FUE-graft zelf, maakt hij alle incisies in het ontvangende gebied en bepaalt hij het haarlijnontwerp, de hoek en de dichtheid; technici plaatsen de grafts in zijn incisies.4 Bij FUT gebruikt hij een trichofytische sluiting die bedoeld is om haar door het litteken te laten groeien.4 De ingreep gebeurt onder lokale verdoving terwijl de patiënt wakker is, met een kalmeringsmiddel bij angst, één chirurgische patiënt per dag, die ongeveer 8-10 uur aanwezig is.4 Het vroegste stadium dat de kliniek behandelt is Norwood III, en jongere patiënten krijgen het advies eerst hun haaruitval te stabiliseren.4
Prijzen
FUE kost een vast bedrag van £5,50 per graft met een minimum van £5.500; FUT volgt hetzelfde tarief voor de eerste 2.000 grafts en daalt daarboven naar £3,00 per graft.3 Ongeschoren FUE kost £10 per graft plus een toeslag van £500-£1.000, en littekencorrectie heeft een minimum van £7.000.3 De prijzen zijn inclusief postoperatieve producten en nazorg.3 Gangbare ingrepen kosten gemiddeld £7.000-£9.000.4 PRP begint bij £395 per zone.3
Boeken en nazorg
Boeken begint met een consult in persoon bij Dr Ball in Portsmouth, dat £150 kost, ongeveer 45 minuten duurt en wordt gevolgd door een samenvattende brief voor de huisarts per e-mail.4 Voor de ingreep geldt een verplichte bedenktijd van twee weken, waarin aanbetalingen terugbetaald kunnen worden.4 De nazorg omvat een verpleegkundige lijn die 24/7 bereikbaar is en nazorgsprays; het haar wordt zes dagen niet gewassen, patiënten zijn meestal op dag tien korstvrij, en het contact met de verpleegkundige loopt door in het eerste jaar.4
Kwalificaties en lidmaatschappen
De kliniek vermeldt Dr Ball als Fellow van de International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, als Diplomate en examinator van de American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery, als lid van het Royal College of Surgeons of England en als geregistreerd bij de General Medical Council.1 Ze stelt dat de kliniek in september 2018 is geïnspecteerd door de Care Quality Commission.4
