Dr. Edward Ball

Edward Ball is Founder and Medical Director of The Maitland Clinic, based near Portsmouth.1 He trained in microsurgery and dermatology and spent a decade on the skin cancer surgery team at University Hospital Southampton before moving into hair restoration.1 He then completed a Fellowship in Hair Restoration Surgery in Beverly Hills under Dr Craig L. Ziering, was Clinical Director of Ziering Medical UK, and founded The Maitland Clinic in 2015.1 The clinic also has a Harley Street, London presence, though London currently has no capacity, so consultations and surgery take place in Hampshire.2

The clinic offers FUE and FUT, plus repair surgery for prior transplants elsewhere.3 It performs non-shaved FUE in select smaller cases.4 Per its FAQ, Dr Ball extracts every FUE graft personally, makes all recipient incisions, and sets hairline design, angle and density; technicians place grafts into his incisions.4 For FUT he uses a trichophytic closure meant to encourage hair growth into the scar.4 Surgery uses local anaesthetic with patients awake, sedative offered for anxiety, one surgical patient booked per day, present around 8-10 hours.4 Its earliest treatable stage is Norwood III, and younger patients are advised to stabilise hair loss first.4

FUE is priced at a flat £5.50 per graft with a £5,500 minimum; FUT follows the same rate for the first 2,000 grafts, dropping to £3.00 per graft above that.3 Non-shaved FUE costs £10 per graft plus a £500-£1,000 supplement, and repair surgery carries a £7,000 minimum.3 Prices include post-operative products and aftercare.3 Typical procedures average £7,000-£9,000.4 PRP starts at £395 per zone.3

Booking starts with an in-person consultation with Dr Ball at Portsmouth, costing £150, lasting around 45 minutes and followed by an emailed GP summary letter.4 A two-week cooling-off period is required before surgery, with deposits refundable during that window.4 Aftercare includes a 24/7 nurse line and aftercare sprays, with hair washing avoided for six days and patients typically scab-free by day ten, plus nurse contact continuing through the first year.4

The clinic lists Dr Ball as a Fellow of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, a Diplomate and examiner for the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery, a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and registered with the General Medical Council.1 It states the clinic was inspected by the Care Quality Commission in September 2018.4
