Haircuts for a receding hairline: what people tried, and how it went

Most haircut lists show models with full hairlines. This page shows what 1,564 people with receding or thinning hair wrote about the haircut they got, on r/tressless from Jan 2012 to Jul 2026: which cut, and, where they said so, whether they liked it and why.

In short: going short is what most of them did. 709 people described a buzz cut and 589 a shaved head. Of those who said how it went, about half liked it (buzz 50%, shaved 51%) and about a third didn't (buzz 37%, shaved 35%). Those who liked it most often said it made them feel better; those who didn't most often said it showed the loss more. 166 people kept more length (short sides with a longer top, a crop, a fringe, a side part, long hair): 59 of the 77 who gave a verdict liked their cut, and 37 of those said it hid the loss. These are people's own accounts, not a survey: they tell you what the trade-offs were for them.

Which haircut people got, and whether they liked it

Each person counts once per haircut, with what they said the last time they wrote about it. “Said how it went” leaves out those who mentioned the cut without saying how it went (often: “I buzzed it when I started finasteride”).

Percentages only where 30 or more people said how it went; below that, the number of people. Buzz cuts and shaved heads dominate partly because that is what r/tressless talks about, and partly because “I buzzed it” is easy to find in text while a described style is not. Read the smaller rows as examples, not as rates.

Buzz cut with a receding hairline

709 people described buzzing their hair (any clipper length); the middle age of the 173 who gave one was 23. Of the 341 who said how it went, 50% liked it, 37% didn't and 13% were mixed. What they gave as reasons:

Of the 171 who liked it

  • 67 said it made them feel better or stop worrying
  • 40 said it made the loss less visible
  • 24 said others reacted well
  • 24 said it was easy: no styling, no fibres

Of the 126 who didn't

  • 55 said it showed the loss more (or made them notice it)
  • 29 said they grew it back out later
  • 17 said head shape (or scars, bumps) mattered
  • 2 said it made the loss less visible

The split is the point: a buzz cut takes away the length that hides recession, so for some the temples stood out more, and for others it ended the effort of hiding them. Some wrote that it worked while the loss was mild and stopped working as it progressed (see the quotes below). 141 people named a single clipper guard or length (a #1 guard leaves about 3 mm, a #2 about 6 mm):

guard 0–0.5 45
guard 1 36
guard 2 35
guard 3 16
guard 4 or longer 9
  • liked it: “Recently i buzzed my hair, thought it actually looked better on m then the comb over i was sort of rocking” (Jun 2025, post)
  • liked it: “I recently buzzed my hair to a #1 and it made it less noticeable but, that's pretty short.” (Jul 2025, comment)
  • liked it: “I found a lot of peace when I buzzed it off because at that point there was nothing I could do.” (Oct 2025, comment)
  • didn't: “When my hair loss went into overdrive, I started to buzz using a zero guard. Even then, my balding was obvious.” (Dec 2024, comment)
  • didn't: “Fast forward 2 months and I get a buzz and now I can clearly see my scalp under it.” (Nov 2025, post)
  • mixed: “Unfortunately now that my hair loss is more pronounced, when I get a buzz cut you can notice that the corners are much lighter/thinner, and the bald spot stands out.” (Sept 2024, comment)
  • mixed: “I buzzed it first at 3mm and then at 1.5. That gave me initial confidence boost and felt good for a while but Im missing my hair.” (Sept 2023, comment)

Shaving your head

589 people described shaving their head (middle age of the 125 who gave one: 25). Of the 327 who said how it went, 51% liked it, 35% didn't and 14% were mixed. The reasons they gave:

Of the 166 who liked it

  • 87 said it made them feel better or stop worrying
  • 34 said others reacted well
  • 24 said they grew it back out later
  • 14 said it was easy: no styling, no fibres

Of the 116 who didn't

  • 24 said it showed the loss more (or made them notice it)
  • 21 said they grew it back out later
  • 17 said head shape (or scars, bumps) mattered
  • 1 said they paired it with a beard

Head shape came up for shaved heads and buzz cuts alike (17 and 17 of the people who didn't like them named it), and hardly ever for cuts that keep length. 98 people said they grew it back out later.

  • liked it: “After struggling for years, I finally shaved it off. I was self-conscious first, how people will take it. But everyone says it looks much better than before.” (May 2026, comment)
  • liked it: “The moment I shaved it, that whole mental load just disappeared.” (Apr 2026, post)
  • liked it: “No, the anxiety of balding was way worse than life after I shaved it off” (Oct 2025, comment)
  • didn't: “I shaved my head once in college and learned that hair had been concealing my very oddly shaped head” (Jul 2026, comment)
  • didn't: “I shaved it all off with a razor once. Did not suit me at all.” (Jun 2026, comment)
  • mixed: “Out of anxiety I shaved my head to see what it was like and while I maintain that I look MUCH better with hair, most people aren't judging you that critically.” (Apr 2025, comment)
  • mixed: “Shaving ain't that bad but i do have a thick beard to compensate, dunno how I'd feel if i didn't.” (May 2026, comment)

Cuts that keep some length

Fewer people described these, so the numbers below are counts of people, not rates. What stands out is the reason: 37 of the 59 who liked a cut with more length said it hid the loss.

Short sides, longer top

63 people; 25 liked it, 4 didn't, 1 mixed. Most named reason: it made the loss less visible (22).

  • liked it: “I Keep the top longer and buzz the sides to a #1 and it doesn’t look weird.” (Feb 2021, comment)
  • liked it: “I keep my hair short on the sides to somewhat hide the recession.” (Aug 2023, comment)
  • liked it: “I have a fade on the sides and my high hairline blends pretty well and doesn't look bad on me thank god” (Mar 2026, comment)
  • didn't: “When my hair's really long on top my head (from December until these pictures were taken, I was only cutting the sides of my hair letting the top grow out), it's evident the hair's thin.” (Mar 2014, comment)
  • mixed: “Right now I rock a medium length shortish on the sides longish on top, and it's okay but I think the shagginess actually exposes the thinning a little more” (May 2017, post)

Crop / crew cut

15 people; 6 liked it, 3 didn't. Most named reason: it made the loss less visible (5).

  • liked it: “the cut was clean and did the job which I used it for all my past years (which was to minimize visibility of receding temples)” (Jan 2014, post)
  • liked it: “I get my fringe short enough so that it’s low maintenance to style but long enough so I can mold it in a way that covers much of my temples and forehead” (Feb 2023, comment)
  • didn't: “I tried cropping it short, but I look horrible and the contrast between my pale skin and dense dark hair is making my horse shoe stick out bad no matter what I do.” (Dec 2018, post)

Fringe forward

26 people; 7 liked it, 2 didn't, 1 mixed. Most named reason: it made the loss less visible (19).

  • liked it: “I kinda try to do a messy fringe which I find looks best, because it covers my NW3 recession.” (Jun 2019, comment)
  • liked it: “Now I’m contempt with my NW2 which I have styled in a fringe to hide the corners of hairline.” (May 2025, comment)
  • didn't: “I have fringe right now, and it's starting to look worse and worse with the thinning.” (Dec 2017, post)
  • mixed: “i have it longish like fringe to eye level. and it sits fine but with wind/etc goes all over leaving big gaps in my fringe etc” (Mar 2021, comment)

Side part / comb over

16 people; 5 liked it, 1 didn't. Most named reason: it made the loss less visible (12).

  • liked it: “I have a short back and sides and the top at about 5cm with a side parting and it looks much better.” (Aug 2021, comment)
  • liked it: “I had a healthy comb over and it just looked like a maturing hairline for a while.” (Jul 2023, comment)

Slicked back

6 people; 2 liked it, 1 didn't.

  • liked it: “I started slicking my hair back when I realized A. It's the most natural look I call pull off with a receding hairline” (Jun 2022, comment)

Grown long

40 people; 14 liked it, 5 didn't. Most named reason: it made the loss less visible (11).

  • liked it: “when its long the texture of the wavy hair and the fact that its pretty long makes it difficult to see the scalp” (Jan 2024, comment)
  • liked it: “Thank goodness for my long hair, because I know if I had anything shorter than I usually have it, it would've been in plain sight.” (Jun 2025, post)
  • didn't: “Prior to taking fin, I wanted to see if I could still grow it out long. It looked terrible and made me look 40 yrs old (I am 24) so I shaved it.” (age 24, Apr 2018, comment)
  • didn't: “at work I've got this crazy side partying man bun hairstyle but the moment you put hair up you can see the horror of my hair loss” (age 29, Apr 2025, comment)

“I keep it short”

183 people said only that they cut it short. 31 said that made the loss less visible and 45 that it showed more.

  • liked it: “I got mine cut super short and it’s far less noticeable.” (Nov 2022, comment)
  • didn't: “I recently got a haircut shorter just to compare and omg my diffuse thinning is so much worse” (Dec 2025, post)
  • didn't: “so when I have a short haircut it I look really, really scalpy” (Jun 2019, post)
  • mixed: “I have my hair cut short and it isn’t noticeable that I am balding but it still makes me really sad.” (Jan 2025, comment)

People who changed haircut

74 people wrote about two or more different cuts over time. The most common moves, from the first cut they described to the last:

  • buzz cut to shaved head: 26 people
  • shaved head to buzz cut: 16 people
  • “short”, not specified to buzz cut: 8 people
  • buzz cut to “short”, not specified: 8 people
  • buzz cut to short sides, longer top: 3 people

Before you pick a cut

  • A buzz or shave grows back: 165 of the people who buzzed or shaved wrote that they let it grow out again afterwards.
  • 248 people mentioned cutting it short while on hair loss medication, often to see the progress (or the shedding) more easily. See finasteride results and minoxidil results for what people reported.
  • Not sure your hairline is receding at all? Mature hairline vs receding and receding hairline stages show what people were told and how their stage moved.
  • Thinning at the crown or all over the top instead? Haircuts for a balding crown or thin top counts the same for those people.
  • After a hair transplant, haircuts are their own topic: 36 people wrote about a cut around their surgery, and they are left out of the numbers above. See hair transplant recovery, month by month.

How we counted

We searched our archive of r/tressless for posts and comments where the writer says which haircut they got (“I buzzed it”, “I switched to a crop”, “I shaved my head”) and that mention a receding or thinning hairline: 2,302 of them. Each one was read on its own by language-model classifiers (we checked a random sample of 25 by hand) to keep only the writer's own haircut, not advice to others and not a plan, noting the cut, whether they said they liked it, and the reasons they gave. Each person counts once per haircut, reposted text counts once, cuts around a hair transplant are counted apart, and every quote is copied verbatim from the post or comment it links to.
