Receding hairline stages: where people say they are, at what age, and how it moved
A receding hairline is usually described with the Norwood scale: stage 1 is no recession, stage 2 a slight move back at the temples, stage 3 the first stage counted as balding. This page shows the stages, and then what 1,765 people wrote about their own stage on reddit (r/tressless and r/HairTransplants, Nov 2013 to Jul 2026): which stage they said they were at, how old they were when they said it, and, for 116 people who stated their stage again a year or more later, how it had changed.
In short: most people who named their stage put themselves at Norwood 2 to 3, and the stated age rises with the stage: a middle age of 22 at Norwood 2, 24 at Norwood 3 and 30 at Norwood 5.5 to 7. Of 116 people who named their stage twice, a median of 1.8 years apart, 41% said a later stage the second time, 39% the same stage and 20% a lower one. These are people's own labels, not a doctor's: read them as what people experienced, not as a forecast for you.
The stages of a receding hairline
- Norwood 1
No significant recession: the hairline sits at or near the juvenile position. This is the reference point, not a stage of loss.
- Norwood 2
Slight recession at the temples — often the "mature hairline". The corners move back symmetrically but the front stays intact.
- Norwood 3
The first stage classified as balding: deep, usually symmetric temple recession forming an M-shape. "3 vertex" adds a thinning crown behind an otherwise stage-2/3 front.
- Norwood 4
Frontal recession deepens and the crown thins clearly, but a solid band of hair still separates the two areas.
- Norwood 5
The band between front and crown narrows and starts to break down; the two thinning areas begin to read as one.
Stages 6 and 7 follow when front and crown merge; see the full Norwood scale. People also use half stages (“NW2.5”) for a hairline between two pictures. Not sure whether yours is receding at all? Mature hairline vs receding shows what people who asked were told, and the self-check lists what to look for. Have a V in the middle? See widow’s peak: is it a sign of balding?
Which stage people say they are at
1,765 people named their own current stage in 2,489 posts and comments. Each person counts once, at the stage they named last:
This is who posts and names a stage, not how common each stage is among men.
How old people were at each stage
802 of them also gave their age in the same post or comment. The middle age per stage, and the age range of the middle half of people:
| Stage they named | People | Middle age | Middle half | Under 25 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Norwood 1–1.5 | 121 | 21 | 19–23 | 80% |
| Norwood 2 | 217 | 22 | 19–25 | 73% |
| Norwood 2.5 | 152 | 23 | 20–26 | 65% |
| Norwood 3 | 167 | 24 | 21–28 | 56% |
| Norwood 3 vertex | 25 | 27 | 22–31 | 44% |
| Norwood 3.5–4 | 69 | 25 | 22–31 | 48% |
| Norwood 4.5–5 | 44 | 26 | 23–30 | 34% |
| Norwood 5.5–7 | 45 | 30 | 27–39 | 22% |
The age is when they wrote, not when their recession started, and these are the people who post on hair-loss forums, not everyone at each stage. What the table does show: people in their late teens and early twenties describing Norwood 3 or worse are not rare here (56% of those at Norwood 3 were under 25).
How the stage changed: 116 people who named it again later
126 people named their own stage at least twice, a year or more apart. We left out 10 who mentioned a hair transplant (after surgery a stage label no longer describes natural loss). For the other 116, the first and the last stage they named were a median of 1.8 years apart (middle half: 1.3 years to 2.6 years). The second time, they said:
- a full stage or more further: 16% (19)
- half a stage further: 25% (29)
- the same stage: 39% (45)
- a lower stage: 20% (23)
| Time between | People | a full stage or more further | half a stage further | the same stage | a lower stage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1–2 years | 70 | 13% | 23% | 46% | 19% |
| 2–4 years | 35 | 20% | 26% | 26% | 29% |
| 4+ years | 11 | 27% | 36% | 36% | 0% |
By the stage they named first:
| First named | People | a full stage or more further | half a stage further | the same stage | a lower stage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Norwood 1–1.5 | 15 | 13% | 47% | 27% | 13% |
| Norwood 2 | 24 | 21% | 38% | 38% | 4% |
| Norwood 2.5 | 25 | 4% | 32% | 40% | 24% |
| Norwood 3 | 27 | 19% | 19% | 48% | 15% |
| Norwood 3.5–4 | 11 | 18% | 0% | 18% | 64% |
| Norwood 4.5–5 | 8 | 25% | 0% | 38% | 38% |
| Norwood 5.5–7 | 5 | 20% | 0% | 80% | 0% |
Most of them (92 of 116) mentioned finasteride or dutasteride in at least one of these posts or comments; 24 mentioned neither. Of those who did, 39% named a later stage the second time; of those who didn't, 50%. That second group is too small, and too self-selected, to say what the medication did; it is not a trial.
Why “a lower stage” (23 people): some describe regrowth on medication, others simply judged their hairline differently the second time.

If your hairline is moving
Photos taken months apart in the same light tell you more than any single look in the mirror. If it is moving, a dermatologist can confirm the stage and talk through medication. If a transplant ever becomes the question, grafts by Norwood stage shows what patients at each stage reported, and the independent surgeon directory lists surgeons' credentials, published prices and patient reports, with sources. For styling it in the meantime, see haircuts for a receding hairline: what people got, and how it went.
How we counted
We searched our archive of r/tressless and r/HairTransplants for people stating a stage (“I'm a NW2”, “currently Norwood 3”): 2,175 posts, plus the comments of people who did so a year or more apart. We read each one to keep only the writer's own current, natural stage: not a past stage, not someone else's, not a question, not a joke, not after a transplant. Ranges were mapped to half stages (“NW2-3” as 2.5). Each person counts once per figure, reposted text counts once, and every quote is copied verbatim from the post or comment it links to. Usernames are not shown. Posts that mention suicide or self-harm are counted but never quoted or linked. Built Oct 2026.
SaveMyHairline is an independent hair transplant doctor directory: published prices, checked credentials and real patient reports, with sources, and no clinic can pay to appear.
